In this letter
from Marvel Comic’s legendary Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee to Jimmy Biondolillo, the Hot Hero Sandwich
Music Coordinator, dated Feb. 19, 1981, Lee thanks Jimmy for sending along a
tape of some music for the 1981 Spider-Man
animated series. In his replay, Lee references Hot Hero Sandwich saying he was “now
going to watch ‘Hot Hero Sandwich!’”
Well, the show
had already been off for a year at that point (though two episodes would be
repeated on the NBC Special Treat in 1982 and 1983), but at least it got on
Stan the Man’s radar! As a long-time comic book fan, I couldn’t be more
delighted.
According to
Jimmy, Marvel’s music director Lee refers to in his letter, David DePatie,
called and told Jimmy he had work for him immediately and to come out to LA
(the 1981 animated Spider-Man series
debuted in September of that year). Biondolillo, however, opted to remain in New York City,
where a lot of his work was still based out of, before heading off a couple
years later to work with British bands. Probably for the best as the 1981 Spider-Man animated series lasted only
one season.
