Hot Hero Sandwich Archives: Unknown 1979 Magazine Article

by G. Jack Urso

This brief article appears to be a filler for a newsprint publication, possibly a TV listings magazine. The PR photo with everyones mouth open, perhaps emulating taking a big bite out of the Hot Hero Sandwich, is a one I have not seen before, even among the collection I have amassed.

One error regards noting Dr. Lee Salk as the psychologist who conducted the celebrity interviews. As all Hot Hero fans know, they were actually conducted by Dr. Tom Cottle. Dr. Salk conducted the interviews with children about their dreams for the animation segments.

The complete text of the article is provided verbatim below.

Have a Yummy Saturday with “Hot Hero Sandwich”

There’s something very tasty going on the air this season — it’s a TV show called “Hot Hero Sandwich.” Like hero, it’s packed full of mouth-watering musical acts (like Rex Smith and Joe Jackson), sumptuous skits, tempting actors and delicious comedy! You’ll love watching it every Saturday morning.

But “Hot Hero” is more than a variety show. Created by Bruce and Carole Hart (the folks who brought you that wonderfully touching TV-movie “Sooner or Later”), “Hot Hero” is for kids with growing pains. It’s designed not only to entertain but to be meaningful to today’s teenager. A reknowned [sic] child psychologist, Dr. Lee Salk, will interview stars like Bruce Jenner, Erik Estrada, Pam Dawber and Olivia Newton-John. He asks them to talk about what they were like and what experiences they had as teens. You’ll discover that everyone, even successful people, have had hard times and sad times as teens, don’t miss this great show!
